How could we spend bitcoin?

I work for a nonprofit organization that provides support services to children and families. We recently have been offered a donation in bitcoin (half of a bitcoin). With the stipulation that we do not convert it to fiat or hold it. Our organization’s major expense is salaries of clinical workers which is the largest program cost and also rent (overhead cost). We’d love to use this donation but I’m a little unsure of how we can spend it. I mentioned to my boss that I would be willing to take my pay for a month in bitcoin, but would turn around and cash it which may be defeating the donors purpose. My other thought is to use it for purchases we make regularly (food for groups, office supplies). Are there any sites like Amazon or office supply sites that would take bitcoin that anyone knows of, or does anyone have any suggestions on how we could do this? submitted by /u/Ck43 [link] [comments] from Bitcoin - The Currency of the Internet https://ift.tt/2GH5NWU

Cashfusion Far More Practical Than Other Coinjoin Protocols, Says Data Analyst

Image
On January 29, data analyst James Waugh decided to test and see if the Cashfusion protocol was really anonymous. After testing Cashfusion, Waugh explained he sifted through a number of transaction inputs and outputs and realized that it’s “not possible to establish a concrete link” between them. Also read: How to Obscure Bitcoin Cash Transaction Data by Leveraging Cashfusion Cashfusion Tests Prove the Protocol’s Anonymity Set Is Greater Than Traditional Coinjoin Transactions This week Bitcoin Cash supporters were pleased to see that Cashfusion passed rigorous testing when data analyst James Waugh decided to comb through a slew of Cashfusion transaction inputs and outputs. Following the experimentation, Waugh wrote a blog post on Medium called “Is Cashfusion Really Anonymous?” “A newer Coinjoin protocol called Cashfusion doesn’t enforce the requirement of equal payment amounts and instead purports anonymity due to the high number of participants in a transaction,” Waugh said. Bitfinex Adds Margin Trading on Tether Gold With Pairs of Up to 5x Leverage

Image
Bitfinex, the world’s seventh-largest bitcoin exchange by trade volume, has launched margin trading for Tether Gold (XAU₮), enabling traders to execute more advanced strategies on the yellow metal in a digital form. As of Jan 30, 12:00 UTC, traders are now able to execute on margin using Tether Gold against pairings such as tether’s native stablecoin (USDT), bitcoin (BTC) and the U.S. dollar (USD). These pairs can now be traded with initial equity of as low as 20 percent, giving traders a maximum of up to 5 times leverage, according to a press release by Bitfinex. Margin trading enables traders to borrow funds to increase leverage, offering the potential for greater profits than in traditional trading. However, the potential for greater rewards also comes with amplified levels of risk. Chief technology officer at Bitfinex, Paolo Ardoino said in a press release that the launch of margin trading on Tether Gold would allow for a more sophisticated means of hedging exposure

Apple has completely redesigned iOS Maps, US users will get it first

Image
The big picture: Apple’s Maps in iOS was a buggy mess when it first released. Over the years, the developers have improved it, but it’s never been a real competitor to Google Maps. The smartphone maker is hoping to change that with a fresh coat of paint and a load of new features added to the latest update of its navigation tool. On Thursday, Apple rolled out an updated native Maps app to all iOS users in the United States. The redesign was already pushed out to a few southeastern states late last year, presumably for beta testing. Cupertino says it will implement the changes in Europe “in the coming months.” Maps for iOS has been slow to get fixed from its terrible bug-riddled 2012 launch. The latest redesign was initially announced back in 2018, but even at that time, Apple had spent four years reworking the highly under-performing navigator. The most noticeable difference will be in the amount of detail seen on the non-satellite view. Parks, buildings, and landmarks will be mu

Western Digital and Kioxia Announce BiCS5 112-Layer 3D NAND

Image
Western Digital and Kioxia have announced the successful development of their newest generation of 3D NAND flash memory. Their fifth-generation BiCS 3D NAND has commenced production in the form of a 512 Gbit TLC part, but will not ramp up to “meaningful commercial volumes” until the second half of the year. Other parts planned for this generation include 1Tbit TLC and 1.33 Tbit QLC dies. The BiCS5 design uses 112 layers compared to 96 for BiCS4. BiCS5 is the second generation from WDC/Kioxia to be constructed with string stacking, and is probably built as two stacks of about 56 active layers each. Even though 112 layers is only a ~16% increase over the previous generation, the companies are claiming a density increase of up to 40% (comparing 112L 512Gb TLC against 96L 256Gb TLC, by bits per wafer), thanks to other tweaks to the design that allow for shrinking horizontal dimensions. The density of the memory array itself is said to be about 20% higher. The memory interface speed has

Question about Lightning and number of confirmations

Bitcoin's massive hash rate should prevent deep blockchain reorgs with more than a couple of blocks replaced. In the last 2 years a couple of shitcoins got 51% attacked and coins got sold on exchanges for Bitcoin before their blockchain was rewritten. There is also the scenario that 2 miners find a block at almost the same time and it takes another additional block or two until it's clear what is the longest chain. With the lightning networks success and growth, it's going to be possible to send larger and larger amounts of ₿ over the network. First exchanges are already accepting deposits over the lightning network. Is the following scenario possible, or how is it prevented: Open a lightning channel, spend the funds out of that channel, chain gets reorganised and the channel opening transaction did never happen. With Bitcoin we say 6 confirmations gives finality, is there something in place for channel opening transactions? submitted by /u/cloudgorilla [link]

Are Bitcoin Bulls Finally Giving Up? BTC Shows First Signs of a Big Correction

Bitcoin spiked above $9,400 and $9,500 against the US Dollar. BTC traded to a new yearly high at $9,569 and it is currently showing signs of a downside correction. Bitcoin price is likely forming a short term top near the $9,570 level against the US Dollar. The bulls seem to be losing control, but there are still many supports near $9,260 and $9,150. This week’s crucial bullish trend line was breached with support near $9,420 on the hourly chart of the BTC/USD pair (data feed from Kraken). There could be a substantial correction if the price breaks the $9,260 and $9,150 support levels. Bitcoin Bulls Need To Be Careful Yesterday, bitcoin remained well bid above the $9,200 support against the US Dollar. As a result, BTC extended its upward move above the $9,400 resistance area. The price even spiked above the $9,500 resistance and traded to a new 2020 high at $9,569. However, the bulls fails to remain in action above the $9,500 level. It corrected lower below the $9,500 level, plus the 2

Silk Road Operator Pleads Guilty to 1 Charge of Conspiracy

Image
Roger Thomas Clark, an alleged operator behind the Silk Road darknet marketplace and advisor to founder Ross Ulbricht, pleaded guilty to “conspiring to distribute massive quantities of narcotics,” prosecutors announced Thursday. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York said in a press release that Clark, who was known online as “Plural of Mongoose,” “Variety Jones,” “VJ” and “cimon,” pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy, and will be sentenced on May 29. Silk Road is most famous for being a darknet marketplace where users could purchase illicit drugs and other goods using bitcoin as a payment method. Ulbricht is currently serving a life sentence in connection with his operation of the site, stemming from charges of narcotics distribution, computer hacking and conspiracy. Ulbricht and Clark were both also accused of facilitating “the attempted killing of a co-conspirator,” though neither was charged in connection with this allegation. “Clark’s

Bitcoin May Look Like a “Rocket Ship,” But Investor Euphoria Remains a Problem

Image
Bitcoin (BTC) has been caught within the throes of immense bull-favoring volatility over the past several weeks, which has allowed the cryptocurrency to put significant distance between its recent lows of $6,400 and its current price of $9,500. This upwards momentum has led the crypto’s market structure to grow increasingly bullish, which is leading some analysts and investors to grow euphoric, and even to define the crypto’s macro technical situation as that of a “rocket ship.” It is important to note that this euphoria, however, has led other analysts to grow weary on the cryptocurrency, as times of great optimism amongst investors have been historically followed by notable downside. Bitcoin Sets Fresh 2020 Highs as Investors Eye a Move into the Five-Figure Region  At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading up over 2% at its current price of $9,500, which marks a notable climb from daily lows of just over $9,000 that were briefly tapped earlier today when the crypto incurred immense

The National Bank of Cambodia Will Launch a Digital Payments Network This Quarter

Image
Cambodia is the latest country to demonstrate serious pro-blockchain action. The National Bank of Cambodia’s new digital currency is called Bakong.  It’s effectively a central bank digital currency (CBDC) that was launched on a trial basis throughout Cambodia in July. Chea Serey, director-general of the National Bank of Cambodia, said the system will be operational within the present fiscal quarter. Serey described Bakong as “the national payment gateway for Cambodia.” Bakong will play a central role in bringing all players in the payment space in Cambodia under the same platform, making it easy for end-users to pay each other regardless of the institutions they bank with. Eventually, we hope to allow cross border payment through the Bakong system too. Unlike most blockchain-driven cryptocurrencies, Bakong is a closed system that’s backed by banking authorities. A software wallet is linked to each user’s bank account for them to more easily interact with hard currency. The syste

Stablecoins ‘Flip’ Ethereum’s Native Currency In Transfer Value

Image
A greater share of value is being transferred via stablecoins over the ethereum network than its own native cryptocurrency ether (ETH), according to research conducted by crypto data aggregate Messari. In a recent tweet, research analyst at Messari, Ryan Watkins said stablecoin transfer value had “flipped” ethereum’s native currency, ETH. “This is largely the story of Tether (USDT) transitioning to Ethereum. On a weekly basis, the flip occurred mid-2019. Since then the change is striking,” Watkins said. The outstripping of ETH by stablecoins on its own network signifies a major step towards trust in cryptocurrencies whose values are pegged 1-to-1 to a major currency like the U.S. dollar. The ethereum network allows for numerous tokens to operate within its ecosystem amid the backdrop of interoperability, enabling seamless transactions between multiple parties. ERC-20 stablecoins, however, are by far the most sought after token on the ethereum network in part largely d

Samsung profits halved in 2019

Image
Image: Samsung Samsung Electronics saw its annual profit drop 53% to 27.8 trillion won in 2019, the company said in its fiscal report. Revenue also dropped 5.4% from a year prior to 230 trillion won. For the fourth quarter, the company reported operating profits of 7.16 trillion won, down by over a third compared to a year ago, and revenue of 59.9 trillion won, which is up 1%. For 2020, Samsung said it expects improvements in its overall business performance but that it would also see continued uncertainty in the global business environment. In the fourth quarter, the continued fall in memory chip prices and weakness in display panels were the main causes of the profit drop, the company said. Solid sales of flagship smartphones and improving memory demand, however, “helped ease the decline in overall earnings”, it added. Its semiconductor business continued to be the biggest contributor to profits, with operating profits of 3.45 trillion won in the fourth quarter. The company e

Ripple (XRP) Is Diving, But It’s Too Early to Say Bulls Have Given Up

Ripple started a fresh decline after it failed to surpass the $0.2400 resistance against the US Dollar. XRP price might revisit the $0.2250 support area before a new bullish wave. Ripple price is declining and it seems like the bears protected the $0.2400 resistance against the US dollar. The bulls failed to keep the price above the $0.2350 support area. There was a break below a key triangle support at $0.2365 on the hourly chart of the XRP/USD pair (data source from Kraken). The pair remains at a risk of more losses if it fails to stay above the $0.2300 support area. Ripple Price Could Revisit $0.2250 After a steady rise, ripple faced a strong selling interest near the $0.2400 and $0.2410 levels. Researchers create a robotic hand that can 'sweat'

Image
Through the looking glass: Though it probably won’t happen for at least another decade or so, there’s a good chance many of us will live to see the day where robots become indistinguishable from humans. Some of the main milestones robots will need to hit before that time comes are obvious: human-like intelligence, realistic movements, and slightly less creepy faces, to name a few. But what if robots could mimic humans in less obvious ways? That’s a question one team of scientists decided to answer with their latest research, which has been published in Science Magazine. Researchers worked together to create technology that allows soft-body robots to “sweat,” and thus keep themselves cool. The team built a soft hydrogen-based “actuator” hand to prove their concept. The exterior of each of the robot’s “fingers” is capped with a “microporous polyacrylamide dorsal layer,” which contains temperature-sensitive pores. At low temperatures, the pores remain closed, but when a given finger

Ethereum Just Saw Key Technical Correction But 100 SMA Can Trigger New Rally

Ethereum price started a downside correction from the key $180 resistance area against the US Dollar. ETH is currently below $175, but it is holding the 100 hourly simple moving average. Ethereum failed to climb above $180 once again and recently declined below $175 against the US Dollar. The price is now trading near the $170 support and the 100 hourly simple moving average. Yesterday’s highlighted key major ascending channel was breached with support near $175 on the hourly chart of ETH/USD (data feed via Kraken). Bitcoin price also corrected lower after it failed to continue above the $9,500 resistance. Coinbase Custody Goes International With New Entity in Ireland

Coinbase has launched Coinbase Custody International Inc., a European entity for handling cryptocurrency deposits. Based in Dublin, Ireland, Coinbase said in a blog post that client demand for institutional-grade custodial services drove the move. Separately, a spokesman for the exchange said Coinbase Custody now has $8 billion in assets under custody, up from the $7 billion announced last November. “While Coinbase Custody has served European-based clients in the UK, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands and more since 2018, our dedicated presence in Europe will allow us to offer these services in a completely localized way, with local staff, localized [service-level agreements] and in compliance with local laws,” the company wrote. As part of the transition, “all staking activity performed by Coinbase” will also migrate to Coinbase Custody International, the firm said. In the summer of 2019, Crucial was among the first brands to demonstrate 32 GB unbuffered memory modules, which were based on Micron’s 16 Gb DDR4 chips. Now after a bit of a wait, those 32 GB UDIMMs as well as 32 GB SO-DIMMs have finally hit the retail market. Crucial’s 32 GB unbuffered DIMMs and SO-DIMMs are rated for DDR4-2666 with CL19 at 1.2 V and DDR4-3200 with CL22 at 1.2 V operation. The modules are not equipped with any heat spreader and since they operate in JEDEC-standard modes, they are compatible with a wide variety of PCs that can support 32 GB UDIMMs in general. At present, Crucial’s 32 GB UDIMMs and SO-DIMMs are available as 64 GB dual-channel memory kits priced at around $330 at the company’s website. Interestingly, the faster DDR4-3200 kits are only $2 more expensive than the slower DDR4-2666 kits. Meanwhile, Amazon.com expects Crucial’s 64 GB dual-channel DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM kit to arrive on February 3, 2020. It is unclear why Crucial did not start selling its 32 G

Tesla moves the Model Y release date up to 'spring 2020'

Image
The good news continued on Wednesday when the company released its Q4 2019 earnings and 2020 financial forecast. Thanks to a quick turnaround in building its Shanghai Gigafactory, which was completed in just 10 months, Tesla can now focus on ramping up production of its new crossover SUV, the Model Y, at its existing production plant in Fremont, California. The Ys, which were expected to begin shipping in Fall of 2020 are now slated for delivery by the end of Q1 instead. The company also announced that it is boosting the range of its $51,000 Model Y AWD variant from 280 miles to 315. Tesla did not note whether the $47,000 long-range version, the AWD or the $60,000 performance version are being built first. Tesla plans to have a 500,000-unit production capacity of Model 3s and Model Ys at the Fremont plant by year’s end. That makes sense since the 3 and Y share more than 75 percent of their components. Additionally, the company announced that its solar power business is booming. Tesl

Watch Out Bears: These Altcoins Are on The Cusp of an Insane Rally

Bitcoin’s firm 2020 uptrend has allowed major altcoins to incur some much-needed momentum, with many major cryptos currently pushing up against key multi-year resistance levels that have been suppressing their price action for years. This positive price action over the past month may be enough to break the firm bear market that altcoins have been caught within and lead some major cryptocurrencies – like Litecoin and others – to see some massive momentum. Altcoins Begin Breaking Key Resistance Levels as the Crypto Market Shows Signs of Bullishness Most major cryptocurrencies have been closely tracking Bitcoin’s price action over the past several days and weeks, which means that they have largely seen decent sized gains over the past 24 to 48 hours. Currently, Ethereum is trading up just over 1% at its current price of $176, which marks a notable climb from recent lows of $170. Litecoin has also posted some slight gains today, climbing 1% to $60. Over a multi-day period, most altcoins ha
