Senator Warren tests Facebook's ad policies on lying… by lying

Image
In brief: Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren has made very clear her concerns about Facebook and other major tech companies. In a new stunt, she is aiming to expose Facebook’s policy on allowing lies in political ads, by lying in an ad published on the platform. A sponsored post from Senator Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaign states: “Breaking news: Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook just endorsed Donald Trump for re-election.” The statement is immediately clarified as being false, but the shock-factor employed by the ad has two aims – first to highlight Facebook’s recent policy decision to exempt political ads from fact-checking, and second to bring attention to the Trump campaign’s alleged use of false information in their own ads. Senator Warren has been consistent in speaking out against the power and influence that big tech companies have since she announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination. Back in March, she announced a policy seeking ...

More Nations Join the Club of Crypto-Friendly Jurisdictions

Regulatory barriers are a major concern for businesses working with decentralized assets. Not all governments, however, are putting obstacles in front of crypto companies. In fact the number taking a crypto-friendly stance is in fact increasing. Also read: Ukraine in a Rush to Legalize Cryptocurrencies Under Zelensky Executives View Regulations as the Biggest Threat Government regulations are a determining factor for the business climate crypto companies operate in. A recently published survey conducted among executives from the industry shows that the slow advance in that respect is a major concern. Over half of the respondents, 53% of CEOs polled by venture capital firm Digital Currency Group, singled out the regulatory environment as the main “enemy.” Other threats include a possible economic downturn and cybersecurity risks. A quarter of the questioned managers admitted that compliance was the greatest challenge they faced last year, while a third stated that the lack of r...

US says digital assets are covered by money laundering and disclosure laws

Image
Just how someone registers with regulators depends on what they’re doing. Commodity traders and financial institutions will have different expectations, for instance. However, it’s really a question of who you talk to rather than talking to someone in the first place. The move could help clear the air for investors and traders who’ve been looking for a firm government stance on the subject. Simultaneously, it’s an explicit alert to those who might use cryptocurrencies to fund terrorism or other criminal operations. They could find themselves charged with financial crimes on top of any other offenses. from e-cryptonews https://ift.tt/2VALstc

IBM announces 2019 Call For Code grand prize winner

Image
IBM today announced the 2019 Call for Code grand prize was awarded to Prometeo for developing a health monitoring platform for firefighters. The Barcelona-based team consisting of a nurse, a firefighter, and three developers will receive $200,000 and assistance from IBM and its partners to bring the project to life. Promoteo began as an endeavor by firefighter Joan Herrera. Realizing there were no systems in place to monitor the health of firefighters combating wildfires, Herrera and nurse Vicenç Padró began collecting data by hand. Eventually, they joined forces with three IT professionals, Salomé Valero, Josep Ràfols, and Marco Rodriguez, and the team joined the Call For Code challenge. Can iOS 13’s Optimized Battery Charging save your battery?

Image
iOS 13 has a new feature called Optimized Battery Charging which is supposed to slow down battery aging by preventing the battery from charging up to 100 percent until you need it. How does this work? The idea is that iOS 13 “learns from your daily charging routines” so it can figure out when is best to top up that last 20 percent. This is meant to prevent battery wear by not continually keeping the battery at its fully charged state. But how does this work in real life? The answer here is a “it depends.” Must read : iOS 13: New features you might have missed If you regularly charge your iPhone at night, and wake up about the same time, then this feature does seem to work as advertised, and fast charges the iPhone to 80 percent, and adding that final 20 percent at the last 30 minutes or so before you “normally” take your iPhone off charge. However… (there’s always a “however” or a “but,” isn’t there?). The problem is if you are erratic in your charging schedule, or if you a...

Improved 'Apex Legends' training zone better prepares you for combat

Image
As much as Respawn has expanded Apex Legends ‘ gameplay, its training area has remained… lackluster. You only get to play a single character and a sliver of the available gear, making it all too likely that you’ll have to learn about an ability or weapon in the middle of a real match. That won’t be a problem going forward. An upcoming revision of the training space, nicknamed the “firing range,” will let you try any character, gun and ability in a controlled environment with practice dummies. You can even bring your friends in if you want to practice teamwork. from e-cryptonews https://ift.tt/327kzPU

Blizzard halves 'Hearthstone' pro's suspension over Hong Kong protest

Image
Three days after Blizzard handed down a year-long ban to pro Hearthstone player ‘Blitzchung,’ aka Ng Wai Chung, the company has walked back its decision. In a letter to fans Blizzard president J. Allen Brack stated that they decided since he played fairly, he is entitled to his winnings, which had been stripped after he called for the liberation of Hong Kong during a postgame interview. The suspension for Blitzchung and the Taiwanese shoutcasters who were interviewing him is now six months, as “a consequence for taking the conversation away from the purpose of the event and disrupting or derailing the broadcast.” According to Brack, this is the company not trying to take sides and that its relationships in China — namely Tencent’s ownership stake in the company — had no impact on the decision. It remains to be seen how this move will go over in China, where a response to the NBA’s statement regarding a Hong Kong support tweet by Daryl Morey saw the league’s games pulled from TV and...

Op Ed: Wall St. May Support Bitcoin Adoption, But Markets of Unrest Are Key

Image
Bitcoin has inspired coast-to-coast interest in the United States. In the boardrooms of Wall Street, suited executives are planning ways to profit from it; in Silicon Valley’s tech campuses and studio apartments, hoodie-wearing programmers are creating apps, tweaking code and proposing protocol upgrades. And enthusiasts across the South, throughout the Midwest, in cold Alaska and warm Hawaii, are obtaining, holding and occasionally trading bitcoin. The millions of American bitcoin enthusiasts are right to be excited about bitcoin’s potential to change the world, but most of them, if pressed, will admit that other emerging and unsettled markets hold the keys to mass bitcoin adoption. Upheaval and unrest in established markets, like change and evolution in emerging markets, makes a compelling case for cryptocurrency use. Demand for Bitcoin in Hong Kong Is Rising Data from the peer-to-peer site LocalBitcoins indicates that demand for bitcoin in Hong Kong has recently seen a conspicu...

The cassette tape industry's growth has hit a snag due to material shortages

Image
In context: Traditional cassette tape sales have been steadily growing over the past few years. Cassette shipments increased from 74,000 in 2015 to 126,000 in 2016; a 74 percent boost. Sales climbed again to 174,000 in 2017, and then to 219,000 in 2018. This resurgence is largely due to the success of cassette-based movie soundtracks, such as Guardians of the Galaxy’s “Awesome Mix.” Unfortunately for the comparatively small (but growing) group of people that still buy these tapes for one reason or another, production has hit a bit of a snag. According to a report from Pitchfork, the National Audio Company — one of the biggest tape makers in the United States — has been unable to meet customer demand due to a lack of materials; “gamma ferric oxide,” specifically. The outlet says that the only factory that still refines this material (we don’t know the name of the factory) has been “under renovation” for the better part of 2019. Without those materials, the National Audio Company has...

Apple now sells the Xbox Wireless Controller on its website

Image
In context: Given the many markets in which Apple and Microsoft compete (including the gaming industry, thanks to the recent launch of Apple Arcade), it’s no surprise that the companies try to avoid supporting each other whenever possible. However, every now and then, circumstances push the two sides to work together; or at least to adopt some of the other’s ideas or products (see Microsoft Office on macOS). Apple Arcade’s launch has brought one of those scenarios upon us yet again — Apple has begun selling Microsoft’s wireless Xbox Controller on its official website. This is certainly an unexpected move, but not necessarily an outlandish one. Why would Apple bother making its own controller for Arcade when a solid option already exists? Of course, one could also argue that Apple may have been better served by partnering up with Sony and snagging the DualShock controller instead of working with such a direct competitor. Anyway, while we don’t know what sort of discussions (if any...

Veritaseum CEO in Pretrial Settlement Talks with SEC

Image
Veritaseum founder and CEO Reg Middleton is in talks with the US Securities and Exchange Commission to reach a settlement on claims that the VERI initial coin offering (ICO) misled investors with regard to the token’s potential value. Veritaseum “Knowingly Misled” Investors Back in August, the SEC filed an emergency lawsuit against Veritaseum and its founder in order to prevent him from spending $8 million USD raised by the company in an ICO. The SEC alleges that Middleton  “knowingly misled”  investors about prior business success in order to increase investor demand for VERI tokens and that Veritaseum made manipulative trades to increase the value of VERI tokens. The company raised approximately $14.8 million USD in an ICO held between April 25 and May 27, 2017. /**/ “The parties have been engaged in settlement discussions. In order to permit the parties to devote their resources to settlement, the parties jointly request that the Cou...

Bitcoin Cash Settles More Value Than ETH in Dollars Moved

Image
Bitcoin Cash (BCH) proponents have recently been discussing the amount of value participants have been sending onchain. For quite some time now, statistics show the BCH chain has been moving more money than the ETH network in terms of USD value sent per day. With extremely low network fees, a good portion of people are choosing to move funds onchain with the Bitcoin Cash network. Also read: Market Outlook: Leading Cryptocurrencies Attempt to Break Resistance Bitcoin Cash Moves Lots of Value Regularly BCH is currently the blockchain that moves the second-highest amount of value per day and the network has kept this pace week over week for a while now. News.Bitcoin.com reported on the transaction volume or the total amount of value transacted through the blockchain back in July. Peter Ryan the founder of Ryan Research did a comprehensive report on the transaction volume. “While Bitcoin Cash might be fifth by market cap, its transaction volume is now 2nd,” explained Ryan’s analysis ...
